Make and Break Option:
All new connections should be broken in before being put in service.
The Make and Break procedure calls for three successive make up torques of the connection (60% of the torsional yield of the connection) prior to welding the tool joint on to the pipe. This option provides a surface hardening of the load flank of the thread and the shoulder(s) and prevents an early galling of the connection. This option does not replace the chemical anti-galling treatment, such as phosphating or cold rolling of the threads.
The break-in of the connection prior to welding the tool joint on to the pipe is a rig-time cost saver and ensures a good quality procedure.
DPAL has its own Torque Master unit to perform in-house Make and Break (2 3/8 up to 5 1/2).
